The first of five weather systems before the next high, swung through yesterday and overnight.
It delivered light rain almost throughout the state, with the bigger falls of over 10mm around Bendigo and Mallacoota. It was too warm for snow with alpine temperatures sitting on +1 to +2 degrees.
System two: a trough from the northwest
Another trough sweeps across Victoria today. There is cloud right across and light rain is falling in patches. Little if any is expected around Sale and Bairnsdale, but light rain is likely everywhere else. It is again too warm for snow, and should remain above freezing through this system.
System three: a cold front from the west
The next system is a cold front from the west. It is warm ahead of the front: Mildura is likely to get to 18, Albury 16 and Shepparton and Horsham 15 degrees. It is not that cold behind the front, as it has west to northwest winds behind. This system begins as too warm for snow, then once the front passes snow is likely on the upper slopes. This system has showers through the south (west of about Traralgon), and along the ranges, just spilling into the north.
We take a bit of a break for most of Saturday, with just isolated showers about those areas just mentioned and dry elsewhere (snow on upper slopes).
System four: a stronger and colder cold front from the southwest
This one should sweep through late Saturday night in the southwest and the rest early on Sunday. It should send gusty, colder showers, with local thunder and small pellets of icy hail through the state on Sunday and Monday. Once the front passes (so by late Sunday morning) it should be snow throughout the alpine areas, falling as low as 800 metres later Sunday and early Monday. The biggest falls should be in the southwest and along the northeastern ranges.
System five: a strong and cold cold front from the southwest
Another strong and cold, cold front sweeps through during the middle of next week. This is the last system before another high comes and sits over us. This one looks a repeat of system five.
—
So the southwest and ranges should see the most from these cold fronts, but lighter falls well to the north. Gippsland and Melbourne sit middle of the road. The alpine areas can expect anywhere from 25 to 40 cm of fresh snow by the end of next week.
